Cumbia & Jazz

Its been a hot week in Cali, not that I’d know, I’ve been locked in the studio all week long trying to hammer out Flowering Inferno Volume 2. I’ve taken a short break into daylight to put together this DJ selection.

I thought it was time to serve an offering Orchestral Cumbia & Porro. Its the rattle of Maraca, parps and squeeks of Trombone & Clarinet & the bass thud of the Tambora that I’ve been collecting on record for the past years. It is a very unique sound with roots in the traditions of Monteria Brass Bands, jazz influences of band leaders like Duke Ellington & Machito, artful record producers of the day and Colombia’s own unique musical elegance.

If you like some of the music selected here, it could do no harm to pick up the recent Fuentes compilation of bassist Pedro laza, Pick up something by Lucho Bermudez or for those of you who are spanish speakers (and readers) pick up a paperback of Jazz en Colombia .
