Petronio Alvarez 2010
Beats Win Prizes…..
Pacific Music in Cali.
The Combo Barbaro are scheduled to participate in Cali’s annual Petronio Alvarez Festival at 21.30 Thursday, the 12th of August. The Festival could be considered more of a competition than a festival with competing groups arriving from all over Colombia to play three songs to the judges. The festival lasts all weekend with heats and categories showcasing over ninety bands, on Sunday night prizes are awarded to the winners. The Combo will be participating in ‘Categoria Libre’ (Free Category) where more modern interpretations of the Pacific sound are made. In a total of twelve minutes, three songs must be performed before the judges and audience, one of these songs must be in 6/8 time. A revolving stage makes for a conveyor belt like effect of Marimba & Tambor poly rhythm, a ‘Musica-thon’ of grand propositions.
Petronio Alvarez is a unique & annual landmark event devoted entirely to the promotion and preservation of Afro-Colombian pacific coast music and culture. Many groups travel by boat from remote towns & villages up and down the pacific just to perform. So you can see some really unique music, often for the first time. It is held in a large concrete Bull fighting arena in the south of the city and is well known to get packed out every night, so if you’re going, get there early!!!
More info on the event can be found online here . (Sorry, yes, in Spanish)
